 In this section, I will discuss any peculiar or general film-related topics that spring to mind, stimulate my senses, or arouse my curiosities. I will examine almost any aspect of filmmaking—the omnipresent work of a director, for example. I'm a firm believer in auteurism. Expect my commentaries to be informative, colorful, and in-depth. Some ideas may be extraneous. And polemical disputes can generate extraordinary debates, but establishing an argument for argument's sake is intellectually treasonous. Thus, my intention and hope is to avoid these controversies. That does not mean I do not welcome dissension. In fact, I encourage and embrace all opinions with equal resolve. So armor up, replenish your filmic knowledge, and enlighten me. You have been forewarned.

Auteur-ior Motives Editorial note: I wanted to put this list together sooner, so as not to compromise its already dwindling relevance -- but a few important films remained unseen and I felt that their exclusion would render my own personal recollections of the past year incomplete.       It was for me a milestone year in cinema. Perhaps more than any previous year, I devoted significant time to the art form. Buoyed by intense curiosity and passion, I've undergone what I believe is my own loosely attentive film school. The Disconnect Between Gambling Films & Modern Gambling

Guest Post        In the parlance of strange and passionate people and their strange and passionate affairs, gambling films always seem to gather "cult followings" - which generally means their success in the box office is mediocre, but they're still seen as popular films with niche audiences. Indeed, the basic themes presented in these films - risk, reward, getting into and sometimes out of trouble, and hedonistic atmospheres - are certainly appealing windows into a more gratifying form of entertainment. The attraction, an  instinctual  desire to test the limits of your personal success, is not too hard to understand after all.

The Great Alphabet of Films—J is For

 Jurassic Park          For me, this selection was easier than "I" because there were really only two formidable contenders. However, there's still a difficult choice to be made. It's either Steven Spielberg's landmark science-fiction film Jurassic Park, or Steven Spielberg's watershed thriller Jaws. Either way, Steven Spielberg owns the "J" category of film. What the "J" category represents is a kind of battle of generations, or at the very least, a tangential appraisal of cinematic history. Does a moviegoer value the birth of the "summer blockbuster" more than the inventiveness of tangibly real, special effects driven extravagance—the latter, which reflects the modernized "blockbuster?"
